A new exhibit showcasing the nautical collection of coast resident Norman de Vall will open at the Kelley House Museum in Mendocino. Through November 11, you can see antique coastal charts dating back to the 1700’s, sextants old and new, a large brass compass from a sailing ship, taffrail logs that were pulled behind the ship to calculate its speed, a caulking mallet and irons, and other navigational implements needed to travel upon the seas in the age of sail.

Norman de Vall began collecting nautical items in his childhood and this extended into his work career with historic ships in San Francisco and as captain of the last cargo sailing vessel from North Europe to San Francisco. Come see the beautifully crafted items he’s cherished for years, learn about navigation before GPS satellites put our location on our phones, and marvel at the intricate cartography of centuries-old maps.

Wind & Water: The Nautical Collection of Norman de Vall  will be on display until November 11, 2019 at the Kelley House Museum, 45007 Albion Street in Mendocino. Hours 11:00 to 3:00 Friday through Monday. Contact 707/937-5791 or info@KelleyHouseMuseum.org
