Sarah Bodnar and Gowan Batist are the women who put eating locally to the test for an entire year in 2013. They went entirely off the "industrial food system" and ate only those foods they could procure locally. As noted in an article in the Ukiah Daily Journal in February 2014, the experiment challenged the "inner pioneer woman." On Sunday July 31st, at 3 p.m. the Kelley House Museum will present a reprise of Bruce Levene’s digital scrapbook of music, photographs, graphics, spoken voice and poetry from Mendocino in the 1970s. The revised two hour presentation, now titled “Good Hope,” contains works by 25 musicians, 6 poets, 5 interview excerpts, 6 Mendocino News Service/KMFB excerpts, 17 known photographers and artists plus numerous graphics. Due to the presentation’s length, the program will begin at 3:00 p.m. (instead of the usual 4:00 p.m.), with a 10 minute intermission. Sunday, June 12th, 2016 the Kelley House presents a talk by Dr. Elmano Costa of California State University, Stanislaus titled "Hooked to America - the Whaling Industry's Influence on Portuguese Immigration."  Dr. Costa has been a professor of Teacher Education and the Director of Portuguese Studies at CSU Stanislaus since 1995. Dr. Costa has personal experience as an immigrant, having come to the Central Valley of California from the Azores with his family at the age of ten.
