SUMMARY:The Boy Who Talks To Whales Screening
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Whale Festival with a viewing of the 1975 classic film\, The Boy Who Talks to Whales. Barry Cusick\, one of the Whale War founders\, will introduce the film which was released during the height of 1970s environmental activism. The film follows 15-year-old Andy and his Uncle Will as they embark on an arduous search for Gigi\, a gray whale they believe communicates with humans. Uncle Will is played by local activist Byrd Baker\, whose real-life crusade to “Save God’s Whales” helped spark the anti-whaling movement on the Mendocino Coast\, and who is featured as part of the Whale War exhibit at the Kelley House Museum throughout March. Filmed over 50 years ago\, The Boy Who Talks to Whales serves as a vivid visual archive of Mendocino\, and many viewers will enjoy the “then and now” look at the town and coastline. Seating is limited so advance purchase is recommended. \nLearn more about the exhibit here. \nExhibit and Event location: Kelley House Museum\, 45007 Albion Street\, Mendocino\, CA

SUMMARY:"A Woman's Place Was Everywhere" Opening Reception with Local Businesswomen
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception Honoring Local Businesswomen \nRaise a glass to some of the local businesswomen who work so valiantly to keep you fed\, clothed\, well-read\, and entertained! We’re celebrating their role in our community as a way to kick off the winter exhibit “A Woman’s Place Was Everywhere: How Working Women Shaped Mendocino.” Through diaries\, photos\, and oral histories\, this exhibit tells the lesser-known stories of entrepreneurs\, nurses\, artists\, teachers\, madams\, and philanthropists who laid the foundation for the Mendocino we know today. Discover how their creativity\, resilience\, and hard work—both paid and unpaid—shaped the legacy of the Mendocino Coast in ways history books often overlook. Nominate your own local heroine\, past or present\, during your visit. Bring a photo if you have one. Exhibit runs through March 29\, 2026. \n \nAdmission is free but kindly RSVP below. \nWine generously donated by Handley Cellars\, in honor of founder and pioneering female vintner\, Milla Handley.

SUMMARY:Oktoberfest Homebrewing Demonstration & Beer Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Oktoberfest Homebrewing Demonstration & Beer Tasting\nSaturday\, September 13th\, 12pm – 4pm \nCelebrate this Oktoberfest with a demonstration of homebrewing plus beer tastings from our local Foggy Coast Brewers and North Coast Brewing Company. You’ll also get free admission to our current exhibit “On Tap: The History of Brewing on the Mendocino Coast. \nDrop by anytime during the demonstration from Noon – 4pm\, there is no formal presentation\, but the brewers will share tips and techniques as they prepare a batch of homebrew. If you’ve ever wondered how your favorite craft beer goes from grain to glass\, this event is for you. \nWhile we celebrate the craft of homebrewing\, we also honor its deep roots on the Mendocino Coast. In the 1860s\, German immigrants brought their brewing knowledge to California\, setting up small breweries in lumber towns such as Mendocino and Point Arena.  The fresh\, light German lager styles quickly captured the thirst of the American public and created a lasting mark on the beer industry.  \nSavor the beer and the beautiful view of Mendocino Bay from the Kelley House Museum lawn. Space is limited\, so reserve your spot today and get ready to raise a glass to the art of homebrewing! Kelley House Museum members receive a discounted ticket and a complimentary commemorative keychain/bottle opener as a souvenir. Tickets also available at the event. \nThe Foggy Coast Brewers home brewing club was founded in 2012 by Jeff Neumeier\, Tim Bray and Jack Ridley. The club’s mission is to provide a fun\, educational\, and tasty forum for fermenters of beverages (beer\, wine\, kombucha\, etc.) or food to share their creations\, experience\, and knowledge with other like-minded enthusiasts. The meetings are open to anyone in the community that brews or is interested in learning to brew.  Contact them at  foggycoastbrewers@gmail.com or facebook.com/groups/foggycoastbrewers. \n  \n
