On Thursday, December 1, Santa will be hosted at the Mendocino Hotel. He will arrive on the fire truck promptly at 3:00 pm. Children can have their photo taken, receive a candy cane, and join story hour with Jay Frankson, who will be reading from his book, “A Christmas Story.” In the spirit of giving, children and community members are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal or doll to our holiday tree that will be given to the Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund to share with children in need. Stuffed animals and dolls can bring real comfort to small children whose family life is in transition.

On Saturday, December 10, from 5-7 pm, stop by the Kelley House Museum for our Holiday Open House. Special exhibits this year include antique toys, dolls and a 1940s Lionel train to delight young and old alike.

A collection of Hummel figurines depicting children in a variety of everyday poses and two Hummel angels set the holiday mood. Since the mid-1900s, Hummel statues have been a popular collectible for many people all over the world. The innocent, childlike aura of each piece gives a feeling of nostalgic sentiment and warmth for all to enjoy. Folks of all ages will enjoy running the Lionel train, bringing back many childhood memories from Christmases past. On loan from the Mendocino Coast Doll Club, is a collection of antique dolls from as early as 1870, including baby dolls, “fashion dolls,” porcelain bisque “toddler dolls.” One of our Kelley House members contributed a very unique doll that has seven interchangeable heads with matching styles of clothing!

Also on display through the end of the year is the completed Sev Ickes painting, which includes local town “celebrities” and characters. Created as a capital campaign fundraiser and sponsored by Tom Honer, the painting will permanently hang in Harvest at Mendosa’s.

The museum is open Friday-Monday from 11am-3 pm and open every day between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Step back in time to 1861 and enjoy an old-fashioned housewarming at William and Eliza Kelly’s home on Albion Street (aka Kelley House Museum). We hope you will stop by to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Kelly on their lovely new home, water tower, outhouse and pond located in the center of our booming mill town, Mendocino City (previously known as Meiggsville). Mr. Kelly will pour you a tasty glass of Mendocino Apple Cider. Mrs. Kelly will be serving her famous apple cake, along with traditional snacks of popcorn balls and peanuts.

Refreshments and Kelly family characters are courtesy of the Mendocino Study Club. Earl Ward, husband of Study Club President Margaret Ward, will portray William, and member Sue Ellington will be Eliza. Join us for a step back in time in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Kelley House on Second Saturday, October 8, from 5 – 6:30 pm, at 45007 Albion Street, Mendocino. Free. 707-937-5791

David Jones: Remembering The Seagull Restaurant
From the 1960s to the 1990s The Seagull Restaurant was a well-loved Mendocino institution. In late 1972 David and Cathy Jones took over. Sidetracked from a Berkeley Ph.D. by a series of family tragedies, David moved with Cathy to her native coast (raised in Caspar, she can trace her roots to mid-19th century Pine Grove). Together they ran the Seagull for 13 years. Come meet David and learn why so many people considered The Seagull a lot more than a restaurant. As David puts it: “Through the Sea Gull I made many life long friends and acquaintances… everyday working folks on the Mendocino coast are unusually generous with their time which makes for a strong sense of community… We are all connected one way or another.” Indeed. A lot more than just a restaurant.

3-5 pm Light Refreshments
