During May, the Kelley House Museum will join with other historical landmarks to host walks, talks, and exhibits in recognition of National Preservation Month.

In keeping with this year’s Transportation theme, our Sunday Afternoon With… features local ship historian, Louis Hough. Louis has combed the vault to come up with a treasure chest of seafaring tales to share. The Small Craft Association will return with skilled craftsmen on hand to share experiences in boat building. Our museum exhibit will include a collection of model ships and a photo display.

During our Moonlight Cemetery Tour, characters from yesteryear come alive to tell their tales. Or, learn about the pioneer families and local folklore during one of our our guided tours of the Mendocino National Historic Preservation District. Oh, My Aching Beak

I really appreciate all the concern expressed by the community over the last several weeks regarding the delicate condition of my beak. My friend and Kelley House Board member, Loretta McCoard, took me to see veterinarian Karen Novak at her new office in Mendocino. As best as Karen can tell, I somehow picked up a fungus, which infected my beak. Loretta is helping me take my antibiotics and monitoring my condition. (She sneaks the pills into my bread, and I pretend not to notice.)

Conversations with Marie Nelson

The Kelley House will host a talk by Marie Nelson on “How Historic Preservation Matters” on Thursday, February 11 at 4 pm. The Heritage Days of Mendocino County 2010 Committee is honored to announce a visit to the Coast by State Historian Marie Nelson of the CA Office of Historic Preservation in Sacramento. Ms. Nelson is the Historic Resources Survey Coordinator for the State of California and provides historic guidance to consultants and land use planners.

Enjoy tea and coffee at 3:30 pm and talking with Marie at 4 pm. There is no charge to attend. For information please call Heritage Days of Mendocino County 2010 Committee member Ruth Sparks at 961-1881.

A big “thank you” to the Mendocino Hotel for donating accommodations to Marie during her stay.

Here Comes Santa Claus

Save the date—Friday, December 4^th—for the Kelley House Museum Holiday Celebration. The outdoor holiday lights will be lit, the carolers will lead us in songs and Santa Claus will be arriving courtesy of the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department. Caroling will begin at 5:30 pm. The outdoor lights display will be lit at 6 pm and Santa will be arriving down Main Street soon afterwards with gifts for all the children. There will be plenty of homemade cookies and apple cider. Be sure to stop by to enjoy our holiday displays at the Kelley House Museum during this wonderful time of year. The board and staff wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday Season.

The Kelley House Museum is the proud owner of a new heating system, thanks to the generous donations of the community and a matching grant by the Rotary Club of Mendocino. Our “antique” baseboard heaters have been replaced by a new, energy efficient propane furnace. We want to thank Robertson Heating for their professional installation and generous break on the price of installation. Stop by our cozy home to see our latest exhibits and enjoy a story by one of our docents.

Signs of the Coast

On Sunday, October 25, Rick Sacks, owner of The Sign Shop, will share tales of sign designs that he’s made for businesses along the Mendocino Coast. Rick has been a sign maker since the 60s, so we’re looking forward to his tales from the past. Join us at the Kelley House on Sunday at 3 pm. There’s a nominal fee of $7 for non-members and $5 for members. Refreshments will be served following the program.

History of the Mendocino Water Towers

Mendocino is known for its water towers, which in the beginning were the source of fresh water operating on a gravity system. Many remain standing with some providing water while others have been transformed for a multitude of uses.

Join us this Sunday, September 24, at 3 pm for the Kelley House “A Sunday Afternoon With…” program, where local businessman, Barry Cusick, will share stories from old-timers and explain the workings of the towers and their history. He has been involved in the restoration of other towers and brokered the sale of several. Barry has been a businessman, community leader and volunteer, serving as a firefighter for 34 years, was co-founder of the Land Trust, Friendship Park and the 4th of July parade, served on the Mendocino Historical Review Board and the Community Services District. The nominal admission fee of $5 for members and $7 for non-members will benefit the Kelley House Museum, 45007 Albion Street, Mendocino.
