Sunday Afternoon With…The Seagull
Thursday, June 16th, 2011Join us at the Kelley House Museum on Sunday, July 24 for a trip down memory lane. From the 1960s to the 1990s The Seagull Restaurant was a well-loved Mendocino institution. In late 1972 David and Cathy Jones took over. Sidetracked from a Berkeley Ph.D. by a series of family tragedies, David moved with Cathy to her native coast (raised in Caspar, she can trace her roots to mid-19th century Pine Grove). Together they ran the Seagull for 13 years. Come meet David and learn why so many people considered The Seagull a lot more than a restaurant. As David puts it: “Through the Sea Gull I made many life long friends and acquaintances… everyday working folks on the Mendocino coast are unusually generous with their time which makes for a strong sense of community… We are all connected one way or another.”
Members $5; non-members $7, 45007 Albion Street, Mendocino. 707-937-5791

Sunday Afternoon With…The Andre Family
Friday, June 3rd, 2011“The Andre Family – From the Azores to Mendocino” will be the focus of the Kelley House Museum’s “Sunday Afternoon With,” a lecture presented by Marcia and Alan Andre on June 12 at 3 p.m. The Manuel and Gloria Andre family arrived in Mendocino from the island of San Miguel in 1904. They were one of many Portuguese families that immigrated to Mendocino during that period.
Marcia and Alan were inspired after reading historian Eleanor Sverko’s book, The Early Portuguese Families of the Town of Mendocino (1995), now long out of print. With assistance from Kelley house, they began a search for the family’s story that led them to several major discoveries. In addition, they traveled to the Azores to further their research, and while there connected with living family members. Their program will highlight some of the challenges, discoveries, and surprises associated with their research.
For several years, Marcia and Alan have been on a quest to locate several family unmarked graves at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Mendocino. With help from Kelley House and the Hillcrest Cemetery staff, they have located the graves. Monuments have been installed by Mendocino Monuments. A dedication at Hillcrest Cemetery will be held on June 12 at 11:30 a.m. The public is welcomed.
Please join the June 12 Kelley House program where admission is $5 members or $7 for non-members. 707-937-5791
