In 2009, the Kelley House received a gift of approximately 300 negatives from Dot Johnson, the daughter of Fort Bragg merchant, Everett Racine. Racine was a man of many interests and had numerous hobbies, photography being just one of them. During the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, he traveled up and down the Mendocino Coast photographing the scenes of his time: redwoods, fishing, mills, ships, and the activities of daily life in towns such as Caspar, Cleone, Manchester, Little River and Westport.

Everett was born and raised in Fort Bragg. After leaving to attend college in Stockton, Racine returned and eventually bought the shop, started by his father in 1904. From tobacco to fishing gear and souvenirs, Everett expanded the shop to sell musical instruments, bicycles, art supplies, stationary, and toys for all ages. Everett died in Fort Bragg in 1988 at the age of 82.

In Spring 2010, thanks to generous donations from the Kelley House community, we raised enough money to purchased a new multi-purpose scanner, and now we are able to share these exciting images of the Mendocino Coast captured through the eyes of Everett Racine. Thank you, Mr. Racine, for giving us a window back in time.Thank you, Dot, for sharing it with all of us.

What do four shopkeepers and a banker in the village of Mendocino have in common? More than 160 years of combined service to their customers! They will share their experiences of moving to the coast and the challenges of setting up a business in a rural community.

Erich Schmid has been with the Savings Bank of Mendocino since 1978. He always wanted to live on the coast, and after working with Bank of Marin and Crocker Bank, he ventured to the coast. Schmid has enjoyed being a part of the growth of Mendocino and treasures the relationships he built with local folks and businesses over the last thirty years.

Ed O’Brien of Compass Rose opened his leather shop in 1970. He jokes that he was involved in Santa Barbara poverty and decided to join the poor folks up north. He points out hard work and marrying well allows you to prosper, and he’s living proof that you can live your dream.

Glen Ricard has operated almost a dozen businesses locally since 1968, including Circa clothing. He’s found that if you’re successful others will copy you; if you provide a service or product that has a demand, your business will succeed – whether it is clothing, antiques, toys or car rental.

Skip McClaren is another person who has owned a variety of businesses in the village. He opened the Melting Pot in 1972 and has since owned Pot Gourmet, Body Experience, and Sky’s No Limit. Skip has now scaled back to his kaleidoscope shop, Reflections, on Albion Street. When asked what he’s learned about being involved in the Mendocino business community, he laughed and said, “How much time do you have?”

Susan Cimmiyotti owns Panache Gallery. She started selling estate jewelry 23 years ago, and then expanded to selling original art, glass and fine crafts. She enjoys the wonderful local artists she’s met over the years that have now become good friends.

During May, the Kelley House Museum will join with other historical landmarks to host walks, talks, and exhibits in recognition of National Preservation Month.

In keeping with this year’s Transportation theme, our Sunday Afternoon With… features local ship historian, Louis Hough. Louis has combed the vault to come up with a treasure chest of seafaring tales to share. The Small Craft Association will return with skilled craftsmen on hand to share experiences in boat building. Our museum exhibit will include a collection of model ships and a photo display.

During our Moonlight Cemetery Tour, characters from yesteryear come alive to tell their tales. Or, learn about the pioneer families and local folklore during one of our our guided tours of the Mendocino National Historic Preservation District. You can support the Kelley House by attending our MacCallum House Dine-out on May 19th, where profits from the evening are donated. A full schedule can be found at www.mendocinoheritage.org.

I really appreciate all the concern expressed by the community over the last several weeks regarding the delicate condition of my beak. My friend and Kelley House Board member, Loretta McCoard, took me to see veterinarian Karen Novak at her new office in Mendocino. As best as Karen can tell, I somehow picked up a fungus, which infected my beak. Loretta is helping me take my antibiotics and monitoring my condition. (She sneaks the pills into my bread, and I pretend not to notice.)
