Portuguese History Gets A Redo

The Kelley House Museum is updating one of our most valuable historical publications, “Early Portuguese Families of Mendocino,” by Eleanor Sverko. The book has been out of print for some time, and a lone copy is currently selling on the Web for $350.

In 1991, at the encouragement of Dorothy Bear and Beth Stebbins, the founders of the Kelley House, Eleanor began what became a labor of love. Over the next four years, Sverko attempted to contact one person from each Portuguese family. She read everything about the Portuguese on the Coast from 1877 – 1955. The end result was a 614-page book, including 647 photographs, telling the history of 73 Portuguese families, most of who emigrated from the Azores Islands.

If you belong to one of the Portuguese families or know someone who might have historical information to contribute, contact the Kelley House Museum.
